Stardom Announces IWGP Women's Championship!
Stardom held a 2022 Strategy Meeting and dropped some huge news in the wrestling world! Marie Shadows has you covered!
Today, on Stardom’s YouTube Channel, they held a 2022 Strategy Meeting. The biggest news to announce from this press conference is that NJPW will be having the first ever — truly ever — IWGP Women’s Champion. This is in association with Stardom which is NJPW sister promotion. In 2019, Bushiroad — the distributor for NJPW and a Japanese Entertainment Company — purchased Stardom to bring the all-women’s promotion under the banner of Bushiroad.
Stardom has two main titles which the Joshi (women/girl) wrestlers compete for are World of Stardom (a red belt with stars) and Wonder of Stardom (a white belt with stars).
There are other titles.
However, it is noted that this new IWGP Women’s Championship will not be included with the other Stardom titles. This specific championship will find a worthy champion on November 20, 2022 when NJPW collides with Stardom in mixed tag matches and other soon to be announced matches. This championship will be defended on NJPW Strong and NJPW events. It can, when possible, be defended on Stardom’s biggest events.
This championship will be a gamechanger for NJPW and Japan itself. Wrestling fans have complained about the lack of a women’s division for NJPW. Guess what? They tried in the past, but it wasn’t catching the attention of the fans back then.
However, with the increase in online network membership sales — 200% increase — and the overall inclusion of media covering Joshi Pro Wrestling and more factors, it’s time to slowly have this special integration. The Japanese women have also gone on record to say who they’d love to face from NJPW if given the chance.
Stardom wrestlers have appeared twice on NJPW programming such as events hosted at the Tokyo Dome like Grand Slam and Wrestle Kingdom, and those events have changed the minds of Japanese fans at those events.
The women of Stardom are amazing and adorable, and whenever I catch the Stardom streams it’s always a treat to watch. I just don’t know enough to truly cover it like how I cover NJPW.
