NJPW Creates the NJPW World Television Championship
NJPW and TV Asahi representatives presented the new NJPW World Television Championship. This is exciting news!
Declaration of Power, a NJPW PPV, was on October 10, 2022. During this PPV, NJPW unveiled a new championship. This new championship was created for the young, fast rising stars throughout New Japan Pro Wrestling. This championship creation is in partnership with TV Aashi.
NJPW President Takami Ohbari and Hiroki Mihira of TV Asahi Sports Bureau presented this new championship with these rules:
Every match will be 15 minutes.
A coin flip decides the winner if it goes to a limit draw.
The tournament to crown the inaugural champion begins, today on October 14th.
We have a good line up of competitors. Who are you picking to win?
On October 14, we start with:
David Finlay vs Yoshinobu Kanemaru
David Finlay just had an amazing match against Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Championship. Although David came up short with a loss, he looked like a champion. Now he has his sights set on capturing the NJPW World Television Championship. David Finlay is proving himself to be part of the wrestling debates and conversations for being so good at what he does. Maybe this is his time.
Yoshinobu Kanemaru is fighting for a chance to hold some gold. A member of Suzuki-Gun, he’s been pushed behind the scenes more than the rest of the members. He’s used to being part of the Super Jrs talk but has taken some time off. He’s hoping to win this tournament.
Alex Zayne vs Zack Sabre Jr.
Alex Zayne returns to New Japan Pro Wrestling on October 14th. He’s looking to capture the NJPW World Television Championship. The last time we saw Alex Zayne was during Best of the Super Jrs 2022. He surprised the Japanese crowd and quickly became a fan favorite and also a Bullet Club favorite. Bullet Club has since stolen his socks and has yet to give it back to Alex Zayne. Alex Zayne is super talented but going up against Zack Sabre Jr with his dangerous technical prowess might have Alex off his gameplan.
Zack Sabre Jr has been with New Japan Pro Wrestling since 2017. In five year’s time Zack has become a 3-time IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champion with Taichi and won the New Japan Cup in 2018 and 2022. Zack Sabre Jr is looking to add more gold to his resume. Can he counter Alex Zayne during his first-round match?
New Japan Pro Wrestling feels different in terms of booking and, creating and trying out new ideas. NJPW President Takami Ohbari is in the business of creating dream matches. That was his statement during the start of NJPWxNOAH. Adding the NJPW World Television Championship is a replacement for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. The young NJPW stars are eager for new championships and fight over and create wonderful storylines.
How excited are you for this championship tournament?
