WWE headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico to host WWE Backlash and during the press conference, Triple H, gave us more details on the upcoming tournament to crown the first ever World Heavyweight Champion.
WWE Backlash is tomorrow night, May 6th. WWE is in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Today, they held their press conference on the Peacock and the WWE YouTube Channel as well as other social media platforms.
We first heard from the women, Zelina Vega and Rhea Ripley. Zelina Vega has challenged Smackdown Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley at WWE Backlash.
Of course, Rhea promised that Zelina will not become the new champion. Zelina has the whole island of Puerto Rico behind her, and she promised she will bring home the championship for Puerto Rico.
The press conference then moves onto Triple H. Triple thanks the electric Puerto Rican crowd and the whole team that helped WWE get to Puerto Rico to host WWE Backlash. The last time WWE was in Puerto Rico was in 2005 where Triple H won the championship.
Cody is then introduced and his: WHOA - singalong is loud and powerful. That brings a smile to Cody and Triple H’s faces. Cody also thanks the crowd and team and mentions that he’s focusing on Brock Lesnar. After, he announces the Puerto Rico team that helped make this event happen and both Cody and Triple H presented them with WWE Championships.
More importantly, Triple H reveals tournament plans to crown the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion.
Triple H explains as follows:
The World Heavyweight Championship will be brand specific. Monday Night RAW will have the World Heavyweight Championship and as we know so far, this title will be defended everywhere and any time.
May 8th on Monday Night RAW, there will be 2 sets of triple threat matches. The winner of each triple threat match will then compete on the same night until one becomes victorious. That winner will head to the finals at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.
May 12th on Friday Night Smackdown, there will be 2 sets of triple threat matches. The winner of each triple threat match will then compete on the same night until one becomes victorious. That winner will head to the finals at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.
WWE just concluded with the WWE Draft.
This year, WWE introduced the concept of free agents. These wrestlers can hover between RAW and Smackdown and was not drafted to a specific wrestling brand. Wrestling fans quickly took to social media to complain about the WWE Draft not making any sense and therefore Triple H already breaking his own rules.
