TJP Saves Best of the Super Jrs 29 Block B
Marie Shadows takes a look at Block B matches from BOSJ 29
Literally.
Block B has good talent for Best of the Super Jrs 29 but this opening wasn’t as special as Block A.
However, TJP saved the opening day of night 1 for Block B. So this is his spotlight review article. These reviews are supposed to be a top number standout list but I enjoyed TJP vs Master Wato the most out of Block B matches. So I guess we can say: Top 1 Match from Block B.
So let’s get started.
✨TJP vs Master Wato✨
TJP drop kicks Master Wato with such aggression, almost sending Master Wato into oblivion, with this quick blind side attack. I didn’t even question why TJP never took off his jacket. The intent of that drop kick and quick aggressive start felt like Master Wato either dissed him in the back or Master Wato owes TJP money. Neither are true, not that I know of, but I’m just saying how it felt.
TJP is a master at wrestling and I enjoy his matches. I got to see him wrestle live at MLW FightLand back in October 2021.
So after TJP quickly starts the match, Master Wato is able to recover and get in some offense of his own. Master Wato has grown on me and I can see his growth as a wrestler shine through as he faces TJP.
However, TJP does slow the match down by working on Master Wato’s arm which controls the pace and dictates the direction of the match.
Both competitors felt matched but TJP was always one step ahead of Master Wato. Towards the end of the match, TJP went for a his frog splash and followed it up with an deep hook on the STF submission. Master Wato tried to get to the ropes but the weight of TJP was too much and Master Wato tapped. This gives TJP is 2 points.
TJP is my pick to win Block B.
TJP = 2 points | Master Wato = 0 points
✨Douki vs El Lindaman✨
Douki is representing Suzuki-gun. El Lindaman is representing GLEAT.
Douki is a great wrestler. He often doesn’t get to shine enough. In multi-tag matches he gets in what he can but usually takes the loss if the multi-tag matches are story based. It’s to protect the actual single competitors in the story. And this is why people would think Douki is the weakest link of Suzuki-gun. Douki had a wonderful match with El Lindaman. It felt like an introduction to both men when I knew they can do more for the opening night of B Block.
El Lindaman is also part of Strong Hearts with CIMA and T-Hawk. Strong Hearts as a team is amazing to watch. I will say that El Lindaman did an amazing block technique that the camera caught. Douki tried to suplex El Lindaman, but El Lindaman squatted to a low base then hooked his leg around Douki’s leg. You can’t suplex someone like that. The details in wrestling matter. Loved that.
El Lindaman controlled this match for the most part. Douki always went back to his finisher the DOUKI CHOKEY. However, even if it seemed like El Lindamen controlled most of the match, these two were evenly matched. They, at times, did quick moves and counters as if they faced multiple times in their career.
However, Douki managed to pull an upset win against El Lindaman. Douki did Suplex Del La Luna to El Lindaman.
Douki = 2 pts | El Lindaman = 0 points
✨El Phantasmo vs Bushi✨
I think somewhere in El Phantasmo’s story arc about his “loaded boot” and his mental block for getting exposed with a “loaded boot” got lost somewhere. If I missed the crucial story drop about how he overcame the mental block after being exposed for his “loaded boot,” please tell me in the comments.
For anyone that doesn’t know about the loaded boot story. El Phantasmo has always used the super kick as his finisher. He called it Sudden Death. It’s a one hit, knockout blow. It wasn’t until Wrestle Kingdom 16 of this year, January 2022, when he was in a triple threat IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team match that he got exposed for having a loaded boot. They found an actual metal slab in El Phantasmo’s boot and by referee’s decision, disqualified Bullet Club’s cutest tag team which is El Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori.
Since the exposure, he’s had a mental block on using Sudden Death in matches which causes hesitation and his teammates picking up the slack to get victories over their opponents. Often times, his teammates would question him and El Phantasmo will have a slinking response of: he’s sorry or mention he has a mental block.
However, when we get to the official Japan betrayal and expelling of Tama Tonga from Bullet Club when Tama faced EVIL in the New Japan Cup second round; El Phantasmo was okay to use Sudden Death on Tama Tonga. No hesitation. No doubt. Nothing. What changed in the span of like 2 and half months for El Phantasmo to suddenly get his groove back to use Sudden Death? Did it happen because Tama Tonga was the target and El Phantasmo knew that weren’t any consequences?
So El Phantasmo is known for his shenanigans such as the back rake, eye poke, flashy lucha libre rope walking, and flips. He can actually wrestle but tends to lean excessively towards sport entertainment. This is no different with his match against Bushi.
Bushi is representing LIJ (Los Ingobernables De Japon). Bushi is similar to Douki in the way of always taking the loss so people may not care too much about Bushi. Bushi is a wonderful competitor, can go the distance, but that string of losses against the United Empire some months ago really messed up his momentum. Bushi took a lot of Tours of the Islands from Jeff Cobb, member of the United Empire.
During this match, El Phantasmo walked on the top rope showing off his balancing skills. Bushi decided to kick the rope, and El Phantasmo falls on his unmentionables. At that point, I was like: Bushi kicked the top rope so El Phantasmo can stop his sports entertainment bullshit.
Phantasmo has the skills needed to be looked as a great wrestler and someone who can hold more gold then the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship Title. But his pursue for acknowledgement or stirring the pot when he does the finishers of past Bullet Club leaders doesn’t have a pay off. Kenny Omega has yet to accept this silent challenge from El Phantasmo. Not even Finn Balor or AJ Styles (in a perfect world) has accepted the silent challenge either. So what’s the point of doing all of that? I will say that it’s slowed down but those finishers will be pulled out if needed during a long fought battle.
Bushi vs El Phantasmo was okay. Could have been better than what was given.
In the final moment of this match, El Phantasmo dodges Bushi’s finisher with Sudden Death and follows it up with CR2 to win.
El Phantasmo = 2 points | Bushi = 0 points
✨Wheeler Yuta vs Robbie Eagles✨
What’s in a name?
What does: WHEELER YUTA mean?
Has Wheeler Yuta found himself yet. Not yet. And being with the Black Pool Combat Club will only hinder his chances of actually growing into the “STAR” Tony Khan wants us all to believe.
Tony Khan doesn’t make stars and wouldn’t know what a star in wrestling would look like, let alone from a 25 year old who’s still searching for what it means to be Wheeler Yuta.
Sure, Wheeler Yuta won championships and can wrestle. He has all the potential, but nothing is clicking. I don’t believe he can be violent. He hasn’t been through enough battles to walk with that battle scar swagger for me to believe he can be violent.
During his match with Robbie Eagles, I wanted something more. Wheeler Yuta performed like it was introduction to wrestling. Like taking the bases of what’s taught in advance wrestling school and applying it. Robbie Eagles allowed Yuta to shine at times. It felt like Robbie wanted to be one step ahead of Yuta but came off as a half a step when wrestling Yuta. Yuta did scout Robbie’s leg sweep through the ropes. Yuta decided to throw a forearm and Robbie decided to throw a kick and this knocks both men down to the canvas.
Yuta then uses Danielson’s elbows. Why does everyone use Danielson’s moves? Why can’t there be originality?
Robbie Eagles managed to get a roll up bridge pin over Yuta to pick up the victory in this match.
Robbie Eagles = 2 points | Wheeler Yuta = 0 points
✨El Desperado vs Titan✨
This was an interesting match. Lucha Libre style match. El Desperado has his excursion in Mexico.
They started with chops between each other. Titan is a death match wrestler thus the scar on his chest. El Desperado tries ripping off Titan’s mask. Referee Red Shoes Unno stops El Desperado from completely ripping off Titan’s mask.
Titan regains his bearings and does a moonsault onto El Desperado. Titan then locks on a Mexican Style Figure Four leg lock on El Desperado. Desperado gets to the rope for a rope break.
After several back and forth exchanges of attacks, El Desperado does Pinche Loco on Titan to pick up the win.
Despy = 2 points | Titan = 0 points
